BIOLOGY WEEK 1 - ECOSYSTEMS & COMMUNITIES
This week we are going to continue our study of ecology as we take a closer look at ecosystems and communities. This is broken up into two condensed lessons. Please read the instructions, watch the videos, answer the questions, and fill out the Google form by the end of the week.
There will be a Zoom meeting on Thursday at 11am, and you will receive a link to join that in your student email.
Complete the lessons at your own pace and have a great week!

Lesson #1
When we take a closer look at a community, we have to recognize the relationships between the organisms that live in them and competition plays a large role in defining those communities. First watch CrashCourse - Community Ecology video located to the right. After watching, can you answer the following questions: 1. What is competitive exclusion? 2. What is a niche? 3. What is the difference between commensalism and mutualism? |
|
After watching this and answering the questions above, go for a walk around your house to see if you can see any ecological relationships in your local community. Once you've done that, you are done with your first lesson!
Lesson #2
We are now going to take a look at the more gruesome side of ecological relationships when see the role of predation. After watching CrashCourse - Community Ecology 2, can you answer the following questions: 1. What is the difference between predator and prey? 2. What is herbivory? 3. What is a parasite? Predation is intense and parasites are a bit scary. Check out a few more examples of predation in this ASAPscience video: |
If that interests you, there are many more videos out there that I'll let you check out at you leisure. If that grossed you out, I'm sorry but at least now it's over. The last thing that I ask of you for this week is scroll down and fill out the Google form.
