BIOLOGY WEEK 2 - POPULATIONS

This week we are going to continue our study of ecology as we take a closer look at populations. We are going to take a look at populations in ecosystems and the human population. Please read the instructions, watch the videos, answer the questions, and fill out the Google form by the end of the week.
There will be a Zoom meeting on Thursday at 11am, and you will receive a link to join that in your student email.
Complete the lessons at your own pace and have a great week!

Lesson #1
Here's a weird thought, have you ever considered eating bugs? Maybe on a dare? Well, when we look at populations Ecology there is a lot of insect-eaters out there, more than just Timon and Pumba from the Lion King (not to be confused with the Tiger King). I'm not sure if my humor translates in this online format, but I hope you got a little chuckle from that last one... First watch CrashCourse - Population Ecology video located to the right. After watching, answer the following questions in a Google Doc then share it with me or take a picture of your notebook then email it to me ([email protected]): 1. What is a population? 2. What is the difference between density-independent and density-dependent factors? Give an example of each. 3. What is the difference between commensalism and mutualism? Make sure to watch the ASAPscience video "Should we all be eating insects?" It's an interesting one with some good information. |

Lesson #2
We are now going to take a look at the more gruesome side of ecological relationships when see the role of predation. After watching, answer the following questions in a Google Doc then share it with me or take a picture of your notebook then email it to me ([email protected]). You can include it with your questions from Lesson #1: 1. What are the three (3) things that have allowed humans to grow exponentially? 2. What is exponential growth? 3. What do you think is the human carrying capacity for Earth? (For #3 just make an educated guess and explain why you think that.) The last thing that I ask you to do this week is fill out the Google Form below. Thank you for your hard work. As always have a great day and GO VIKINGS! |
