BIOLOGY WEEK 5 - NATURAL SELECTION

Picture
This week we are going to take a look at Natural Selection. I know it feels like we're spending a lot of time talking about Evolution, but it's an important process that effects the world around us. Simply put, Natural Selection is the mechanism for Evolution, and genetic variation as a result of mutation provides the opportunity for this to happen, but that is a lesson for another day.

There will be a Zoom meeting on Thursday at 4pm, and you will receive a link to join that in your student email.

Complete the lessons at your own pace and have a great week!

Lesson #1
Let's take a deeper look at how natural selection works. After watching, answer the following questions in a Google Doc then share it with me or take a picture of your notebook then email it to me (ken.wedgwood@jpsk12.org):

1. What were two of the traits that the "blobs" were selected for?
2. How does natural selection work?
3. What is the result of natural selection?

Lesson #2
New traits and new species can evolve as a result of changes in the gene pool. Next we are going to take a look at speciation. After watching, answer the following questions in a Google Doc then share it with me or take a picture of your notebook then email it to me (ken.wedgwood@jpsk12.org). You can include it with your questions from Lesson #1:

1. Why is altruism provide an evolutionairy advantage?
2. Who was Alfred Russel Wallace?
3. What is something new you learned about Charles Darwin or Evolution?

The last thing that I ask you to do this week is fill out the Google Form below. Thank you for your hard work. As always have a great day and GO VIKINGS!
