Classroom Management
What Exactly is Classroom Management?
One of the main roles of the teacher is to create an effective classroom environment that promotes learning. Classroom management refers to all the things a teacher does to organize students, space, time, and materials so student learning can take place (Wong, 2010, p.83). This website represents and includes my management plan that I will use to effectively teach and foster a positive learning environment.
Personal Beliefs about Classroom Management
Classroom management is a necessary part of every teacher's job, and the best way to do that part of the job is to have a plan. A well-managed classroom has a set of procedures and routines that structure the classroom. A procedure is a method or process for getting things done in the classroom. Once a procedure is done enough times it becomes a routine, which is what students do automatically without prompting or supervision, which allows the teacher to focus on the next task at hand (Wong, 2010, p.170).
Research has proven that a schools' and classrooms' cleanliness, orderliness, and character influences the students’ behavior and the ability of a teacher to teach (Lackney, 1996). The key to all of that is preparation, preparation, preparation. By laying out how I intend to manage my classroom I will be prepared to effectively manage and teach my students.
Since I will be certified to teach at the secondary level I will be working with young adults, as I like to consider them. As a result, my management style expects students to behave as such. By treating this age of students as young adults and having high expectations for how they behave in my classroom, they will learn to know what behavior is and is not accepted in Mr. Wedgwood's class. Although my previous statement may have come across strong (nope, I think it came across well! I am glad you said it), that truly represents how I intend to set the tone for the classroom (What specific actions would support this perception you want to implement?).
My philosophy on classroom management is quite simple. Once all the routines, procedures, and rules are in place, and I have built strong relationships with my students by investing in them, then behavior problems are become few and far between. I have seen this firsthand from the perspective of a student and from the perspective of a teacher. Like any good game, once the rules and regulations are in place then the main event can begin then learning can take place very effectively and efficiently.
Personal Style of Classroom Management
In anything a person does, their personal style will shine through; teaching is no exception. My personality is reflected through my teaching in many ways.
Since I am a positive person, I will always come to class with a good attitude despite recent events, the weather, or an personal matters. By acting in this way and creating a positive learning environment, I can help students overcome personal matters and negative events that otherwise would hinder their academic success.
In addition to being positive, I am also a very consistent and reliable person. When I have a method for doing something that works, I stick to it, and when I tell someone I will do something, I do it. This is a very important aspect of being a leader in the classroom, dealing with students who may have a very inconsistent home life or group of friends. By being someone students can rely on creates a classroom climate that allows students to let their guard down and focus on their school work.
Despite the fact that I strive to be very consistent, I do not like things to become stagnant or stale. This is why I am also a creative person. Being creative in how I do things, I have the ability to make innovating ways to learn. For example, instead of looking at images of how a cell divides, I could have them act out as a class the process of mitosis.
And last but not least, I am hard working. If there is a task at hand, I will work until it is completed. It is importnat to me that the work I complete is quality, which requires me to sometimes put in more personal time than others, but my end product is worth the time and effort. Teaching is a occupation and a lifestyle. Quality teachers are very observant, constantly looking for novel ways to improve how they teach and new information in their subject area.
