Communication Plan
Communicating with stakeholders in a student's education is crucial to student success. In my classroom I will recruit a team effort that involves parents, other teachers, and administration in my students' education. When all of these people are invested in student success, students are equipped with the support they need to reach their full potential.
Communicating with parents/guardians can take many different forms. At the high school level, not all parents want a weekly e-mail that they consider to be spam or monthly newsletter that sits on the table unread. Because of this, I will have a class website, that I will update weekly, where they can keep track of what is going on in my class at their leisure. Beyond that, I will make sure to keep the school's grading website up to date so that parents can see what their student's current grade is. Also, I will promptly respond to any e-mail that is sent to me by a parent/guardian and make myself available for setting up a meeting. Lastly, I will go to parent teacher conferences prepared to talk with each and every parent that attends.
Building relationships with my colleagues and administrators are part of being a good teacher and coworker. I will intentionally get to know my fellow staff by talking to them before the school year starts, during the school year, and at all of our formal meetings, at appropriate times of course. Simply things like having lunch together and chatting in the hallways before or after school are great ways to get to know my coworkers. Getting to know the teaches I work with is essential in establishing healthy, professional work environment. If a situation requires it, I will set up a formal meeting, and having intentional prior interactions will significantly help in allowing those meetings to go smoothly.
Student communication is also very important and should not be overlooked. I will make myself available to talk to my students before school, after school, and during class. Also, I will give them my e-mail in case they need to contact me outside of school. They too will have access to my class website as a resource for communication. It is important to me to keep teacher-student communication appropriate outside of school, so I will not allow them to be friends with me on social media. Using social media can be a great educational tool, but I will not use my personal accounts for building relationships with my students. Communication is best done face to face, and I will always welcome my students to have conversations with me in person.
