Philosophy of Education
Philosophy
The primary role of a teacher is quite simple, to teach. A teacher must be able to educate their students to the grade level appropriate standards, as outlined in the curriculum. Although educating is the primary role of a teacher, there are many other roles a teacher must fulfill. A teacher also plays the role of a counselor, discipliner, and arguably the second most important role of a teacher is to be a positive role model.
Gifts
A teacher must have many skills to be an effective educator, but there are also many gifts that teachers should possess to make them an exceptional teacher. One of my gifts is my ability to communicate and interact with others. I am quickly able to read another person’s emotions and help lead, or follow, a conversation. Another gift of mine is my physical size. I know that this may seem like a weird gift, but from my experience large men have a strong advantage when it comes to leading a group, team, nation, and even classroom. Beyond that, the fact that I am a man provides me with a great opportunity and responsibility to be a strong male role model. One more gift that I have is my passion for biology and health. I truly find these areas of study quite fascinating and I find great joy in continuously learning about them. I regularly read books, watch documentaries, and surf the web to stay up to date with the current information and to feed my curiosity and hunger for knowledge. What is even more interesting about biology and health is how they are so interconnected. Beyond my skills of classroom management, pedagogy, and assessment, I believe my gifts are what make me a great teacher.
Experiences
What a person does with their gifts and skills is what makes up their experiences, and the experiences that I have accumulated over the past several years have greatly shaped me into the educator I am. One of the main experiences I have had is observing over one-hundred and twenty hours in many different classrooms for the subject areas I am certified to teach. Those experiences have helped me see many different teaching methods, which in turn, has helped me create a hybrid style that I believe works best for me. Another experience I have had is the opportunity to teach several lessons in front of my peers. Being a teacher’s assistant for several biology classes has also helped me to further familiarize myself with my content and has forced me to explain various topics in creative ways to struggling peers. Additionally, I completed a twelve week placement at Jackson High School as a student teacher, where I assumed the full responsibility and role of the educator. These experiences have really helped affirm my decision to teach and have aided me on my way to master my craft as an educator.
